Controlling the Transponder

When flying on VATSIM, you will need to switch your transponder between Standby and Mode C. In most cases, you should use Mode C when you are on the active runway or airborne. Mode C allows controllers to see your altitude on radar.

At some airports, you may also be asked to use Mode C while on the ground. This is common at airports with surface surveillance systems such as ASDE-X, and it will usually be noted on the airport diagram or in ATIS.

Toggle Transponder Mode

To change transponder mode in xPilot, click the MODE C button in the client. The button turns green when Mode C is enabled.

You can also control the transponder directly from your aircraft’s transponder panel in the simulator.

Squawk Ident

Controllers may occasionally ask you to squawk ident. This temporarily highlights your target on their radar scope so they can identify you more easily.

If instructed to squawk ident, press the IDENT button in xPilot or use the IDENT function on your aircraft’s transponder panel.

The IDENT button turns green after xPilot sends the ident signal to the network, then returns to its normal state once the ident has completed.
